NUMS MDCAT 2026: Complete Guide — Syllabus, Pattern, Merit & Admission Process
Everything you need to know to crack the NUMS Entry Test — full syllabus chapter by chapter, MCQ breakdown, merit formula, all participating institutes, and the exact admission steps for both civilian and Armed Forces pathways.
What Is NUMS MDCAT?
The National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) is a leading medical university in Pakistan that oversees admissions for Army Medical College (AMC) and a network of affiliated private medical and dental colleges — many linked to the Pakistan Armed Forces (CMH colleges, HITEC, Fazaia, Bahria, Foundation University, etc.).
The NUMS Entry Test (NUMS-MDCAT) is the mandatory competitive examination for any student wishing to enter these institutions. It is separate from the National MDCAT conducted by PMDC — it is NUMS's own test, held annually, and your score on this test carries the highest weight (50%) in the final merit calculation.
Test Structure & Subject Weightage
NUMS MDCAT is split into two papers taken on the same day. Paper-I tests your subject knowledge; Paper-II assesses your psychological aptitude for medical studies.
| Paper | Content | MCQs | Duration | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English | 150 | 2 hrs 45 min | 1 best answer, 4 options |
| Paper-II | Psychological / Aptitude Test | 50 | 15 min | 1 best answer, 7 options |
Difficulty Level Distribution

Two Admission Pathways
NUMS-affiliated colleges offer seats through two completely different routes. Choose your pathway below and follow its specific process.
🎖️ Pathway A: Armed Forces (Medical Cadet)
This route is for students who want to join Army Medical College (AMC) or other military-administered medical colleges as a Medical Cadet. You receive government funding for your MBBS/BDS, but you commit to serving in the Pakistan Armed Forces after graduation.
Physical Fitness Requirements
You must pass these physical benchmarks at the Army Selection & Recruitment Centre (AS&RC):
Step-by-Step Admission Process
Online Registration at JoinPakArmy.gov.pk
Register through the official Join Pak Army portal or at your nearest Army Selection & Recruitment Centre (AS&RC). This is your entry into the military selection pipeline.
Preliminary Screening at AS&RC
This is the first filter. You sit three tests on the same day:
- Intelligence Test: ~84 Verbal + ~64 Non-Verbal MCQs (logic, spatial reasoning, mental speed)
- Initial Academic Test: Computer-based Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English (FSc level)
- Personality Test: Psychological screening for mental aptitude
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) & Preliminary Medical
Candidates who pass Step 2 are immediately called for the PFT (run, push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups, ditch crossing). Those who pass are then given a preliminary medical exam checking height, weight, vision, and basic physical health.
NUMS MDCAT Examination
Sit for the official NUMS Entry Test. This carries academic weightage in your final merit. Paper-I: 150 subject MCQs in 2 hrs 45 min. Paper-II: 100 Psychological Test MCQs in 30 min (mandatory, evaluates mental robustness).
GHQ Selection Board — Rawalpindi
Shortlisted candidates are called to AMC Rawalpindi for the GHQ board evaluation:
- Psychological Assessment: In-depth written tests and group activities to judge leadership and stability
- Final Interview: Panel of military officers and doctors assesses communication skills, general knowledge, and motivation to serve
Final Medical Examination at CMH
Comprehensive medical check-up at a designated Combined Military Hospital. Includes blood tests, X-rays, and full physical screening to confirm 100% fitness for military service.
Final Merit List & Joining Letter
Merit is calculated from Matric marks + FSc marks + NUMS Entry Test score + GHQ Selection Board performance. Successful candidates receive a joining letter to start their 5-year MBBS or 4-year BDS degree as Medical Cadets.
🎓 Pathway B: Civilian (Open Merit)
This route is for students who want to join any NUMS-affiliated private medical or dental college as a fee-paying civilian student. There is no military obligation, no physical fitness test, and no GHQ interview — your admission is based purely on academic merit.
Register & Appear in NUMS MDCAT (July–August)
Register through the official NUMS website (nums.edu.pk). Sit for Paper-I (150 subject MCQs) and the mandatory Paper-II Psychological Test (50 MCQs). You need 55% to qualify for MBBS and 50% for BDS.
Apply Through NUMS Centralized Admission Portal (November)
Once results are out, NUMS opens a single centralized portal for all civilian seats. You do not apply to each college separately. You submit one application and rank your preferred colleges (e.g., 1st: CMH Lahore, 2nd: Fazaia, 3rd: HITEC, etc.). Application fee: approx. Rs. 5,000–7,500 (non-refundable).
Upload Documents (IBCC Attestation Required)
Upload scanned copies of:
- Matric result card & certificate
- FSc result card
- IBCC Attestation (mandatory if you studied A-Levels or equivalent)
- CNIC / B-Form / Passport
- Domicile certificate
- NUMS MDCAT result card
Merit List Publication
NUMS publishes the merit list based on the formula: NUMS Test (50%) + FSc (40%) + Matric (10%). Candidates are allocated to colleges according to their rank and their stated college preference order.
Fee Deposit & Joining
Selected candidates must deposit the semester fee within the given deadline (usually 1–2 weeks) to confirm the seat. Failure to deposit on time results in the seat being offered to the next candidate. After payment, report to your college on the given joining date to begin your MBBS or BDS degree.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The National MDCAT is conducted by PMDC/provincial authorities for government medical colleges. NUMS MDCAT is a separate test conducted by NUMS specifically for its constituent and affiliated colleges. They have different dates, registration processes, and syllabus emphases. You may need to appear in both if you are applying to both government and NUMS-affiliated colleges.
No. There is absolutely no negative marking. Attempt every single MCQ — even a guess is better than leaving it blank.
Yes. A-Level students are eligible but must obtain IBCC equivalency certificates for both O-Levels (Matric equivalent) and A-Levels (FSc equivalent) before applying. The IBCC equivalency is mandatory for document verification — apply for it early as it can take time.
55% (i.e., at least 83 out of 150 MCQs) for MBBS admission, and 50% (75 out of 150) for BDS admission. These are minimum qualifying marks — not aggregate scores. Actual competitive merit is typically much higher.
Based on historical data, competitive aggregates for top NUMS-affiliated colleges (CMH Lahore, Fazaia) typically range from 85–90%+ final aggregate. This means you need both a very high FSc score and a high NUMS test score. Army Medical College (AMC) is even more competitive due to military selection criteria.
Yes. Paper-II (Psychological Test) is mandatory and you must sit it, but for civilian candidates it carries low weight in the final merit (approximately 5%). You cannot skip it. For Armed Forces candidates, the psychological assessment carries significantly more weight as it evaluates aptitude for military medical service.
NUMS Entry Test: 50% + FSc Pre-Medical: 40% + Matriculation: 10%. The test carries the highest weight, which is why a strong performance in NUMS MDCAT is the most impactful thing you can do to improve your merit position.
Registration typically opens in July–August. The test is usually held in September. Check nums.edu.pk regularly for official dates as they can shift slightly year to year. Set a calendar reminder for mid-July to check for announcements.
